David Ashwell - Yesterday's Children project to benefit Save the Children

October 31, 2011

Acclaimed British artist and Malibu resident David Ashwell (renowned for his striking paintings of the Malibu coast) painted this self portrait from a photograph taken 60 years ago. Recapturing that simple innocence of yesteryear gave him an extraordinary idea.

In January 2010, David embarked on an ambitious project to “give back” using his remarkable artistic talents. He is painting a series of portraits of well known and/or successful people from photographs of themselves as children.

David will produce a book of these portraits called Yesterday's Children, and proceeds will benefit Save the Children, who are delighted to be the beneficiary. The original paintings and a limited edition of prints will also be auctioned to benefit the same cause. About the project, David says "Apart from raising much needed funds for Save the Children, it shows kids today that however important 'grown-ups' are, they were all kids once - making any dream possible."

So far, David has completed 64 portraits including politicians, actors, athletes, astronauts, heads of state, movie directors, scientists, entrepreneurs, and musicians. His goal is to produce 100 portraits.
